Safe Streets Academy Applicants Identify Top Barriers to “Complete Streets”

This year, the City of Orlando was chosen to participate in Smart Growth America’s (SGA) first-ever Safe Streets Academy alongside Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, KY and South Bend, IN. These three communities will learn from national experts, collaborate with one another, and discuss best practices in engineering, tactical urbanism, creative placemaking, and community engagement.

SGA asked applicants to describe their barriers to implementing traffic safety measures and the responses did not disappoint. Using that feedback, The National Complete Streets Coalition, in partnership with Voices for Healthy Kids, created an infographic that summarizes some of the most pressing issues (below). We’re excited to see the City of Orlando work with SGA to overcome these barriers and push towards safer streets for all road users.
