Swan Design Commands Crosswalk Attention in Thornton Park

Swans command attention with their grace and beauty. But in Thornton Park a swan-patterned crosswalk will now command drivers’ attention to yield for pedestrians.

On September 19, the Thornton Park Main Street District unveiled this newly painted “swan crosswalk” at the intersection of Washington and Summerlin. The artwork features an intricate swan pattern—an omage to Lake Eola’s most famous residents.

This inspired visual speedbump now accompanies a rapid flashing beacon that was installed earlier this year. The benefit is multidimensional. The design is attractive to walkers but also is a visual cue for drivers to stop for the crosswalk. On top of that, walking and biking in Thornton Park just got more engaging for everyone involved.

Best Foot Forward attended a meeting of the Thornton Park Neighborhood Association in August, where we presented information on driver yield laws and pedestrian safety. Commissioner Patty Sheehan also attended the meeting.

Hopefully the combination of Best Foot Forward outreach, and this beautiful new street art will make the area safer for everyone, allowing walkers to feel ‘free as a bird.’
